Dcc lights
|
|
| |
This page is to show you how to add direction lights to your locos using dcc . The guide below, is just one ended, to show how to do it for a Hst or something like that. I basically broke down a train to show you a simply as possible. In picture below we see a basic DCC chip and a bogie from a diesel loco with wheel pickups in it. You have to imagine that its on a train for this to work........

|
| |
In this picture, you can see the RED and BLACK wires are attached to the rail pickups on the wheels of the train.

|
| |
Now you can see the ORANGE and GREY wires going to the motor. At this point this is all you would need to do to get your train running on dcc. (dont forget this is all inside a train)!!

Just for this small demo, im using LEDs. The blue wire is the next to be used, this needs to go to the long leg of the LED with a resistor of the required value between them.......

|
| |
The next wire to be used is the yellow from the chip, this goes to the shorter leg of the LED. I've left all the wires bare to show the connections, its best to cover the bare wires with heat shrink when putting in trains, to stop any chances of a short. (heatsrink is the black rubber stuff)

|
| |
Remembering this is all in a train , all the wiring may need lengthening and may turn out different in a train (shape not basic principles). The next picture is a bit of a jump ahead as the other LED is attached and has a jumper wire coming across from the other LED with its shorter leg attached to the white wire. Jumper wire is in red circle.

Like i said this is very basic, for a single ended loco. Here is the loco going in 2 directions, first forward then backwards. As you can see im using yellow for forward (as i dont have white).

Here is a wiring diagram. Takes a while to load.

Problems..... You shouldn't have any, it should work fine apart from one minor thing, that is easy to change.......
If you run your train and the lights are arse about face..i.e the red on front and white on back, don't panic, just swap the orange and grey wires around on the motor and that will sort it..... unless you are a dcc brainiac and can do it on the CV settings of the chip!!. |
| |
Below is another diagram for those of you who run 2 eneded locos like class 37s and 47s and you wish to have lights both ends.

|
| |
Hope this works for you, the only other thing i have to add is , you dont need to use LEDs, you can use any light bulb as long as you make sure its is protected from the voltage from the chip. Most trains that have lights already like the old hornby hst, their lights will happily use the same principles and work fine when connected to the chip the right way. You can also have more than one led, like 2 whites for head lights or 2 rear red lights, its up to you. |
